The Boston Red Sox and Red Sox fans are not pleased with former pitcher Curt Schilling.
Schilling took it upon himself to reveal that former star pitcher Tim Wakefield has brain cancer and that his wife has cancer also.
The organization naturally is furious that Schilling would do this. Schilling forced the Red Sox to talk about the situation even though the Wakefields didn’t want to publicly disclose their diagnosis.
“We are aware of the statements and inquiries about the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield. Unfortunately, this information has been shared publicly without their permission,” the team said in a statement. “Their health is a deeply personal matter they intended to keep private as they navigate treatment and work to tackle this disease. Tim and Stacy are appreciative of the support and love that has always been extended to them and respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”
Schilling revealed the information on his podcast and thought he was doing the right thing because he believes in the power of prayer.
“Tim Wakefield is sick, he said. “Recently, Tim was diagnosed with a very serious, very aggressive form of brain cancer…The situation in Tim’s case is incredibly serious and he went in and had surgery.
“I want Tim and Stacy to know obviously we’re praying for them, we’re thinking of them. Their children obviously going through some very tough times. I don’t want to cliche this, but nobody deserves this…While both of them are now very sick, they both need to know there are a lot of people out here praying and thinking about them.”
Schilling later admitted that he was not given permission to share this information which is why so many people, including the Red Sox, are upset with him.
