MLB team makes notable change with season ticket holders

It’s been a bumpy season for the Toronto Blue Jays who, heading into Friday’s action, sit at 33-35. That start combined with a slight change, might leave potential season ticket holders for 2025 with a tough decision.

Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that season ticket holders are getting their 2025 renewal forms.

Unlike past years, the renewal deadline is in July — ahead of the trade deadline.

“Heard from some Blue Jays season ticket holders who got their 2025 renewal notices via email this afternoon,” Nicholson-Smith shared. “Typically first payments for the following year are required in August or September. This year it’s July 22, (eight days before the trade deadline).”

In a follow-up message, Nicholson-Smith added, “Doesn’t mean Jays would turn down a great offer on July 21 or start a firesale on July 23, obviously. Jays still hope to be buyers this year & aim to compete in 2025 regardless of where ‘24 leads. But it is a shift from previous years.”

The Blue Jays, like a lot of MLB teams, find themselves in an awkward place in the standings. Toronto is 14.5 games behind the American League East-leading New York Yankees. While it’s early, that division race seems like it will come down to the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, who are 2.5 games behind New York.

But the race for a Wild Card spot is a different story. The Blue Jays are only 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins, who hold the final American League Wild Card spot. Even trickier, the team’s roster on July 21 might be much different than it is following the July 30 deadline or on Opening Day, 2025.
