The 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will take place on July 16 at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers.
While the starters have been named, the full rosters for the American and National Leagues have yet to be determined.
One thing we do know, however, is what this year’s jerseys will look like. MLB posted a preview of the uniforms Wednesday night on X, and they’re… pretty basic.
It’s not that the jerseys are necessarily bad; it’s that they’re unnecessary. Before the change was made in 2021, players would wear their own team’s jersey in the All-Star Game, making for incredibly unique visuals on the field. For example, you could see a Boston Red Sox player, complete with a jersey, pitching to a New York Yankees catcher. Or a San Francisco Giant and Los Angeles Dodger in the same outfield. Obviously, this can still happen, but it’s not the same without the team-specific jerseys.
MLB switched to the game-specific uniforms before the 2021 All-Star Game at Coors Field, and while the league claims the yearly uniforms represent the host teams and cities, that’s rarely the case.
Take the 2024 jerseys, for example. The colors are supposed to represent the hosts, the Texas Rangers. The National League jerseys look like Miami Marlins colors, while the American League jerseys have a St. Louis Cardinals vibe.
As plenty on social media noted, the easy fix would be to return to the team-specific jerseys.
