Over the past several months, the participation of transgender women and girls in women’s and girl’s sports has become a fierce debate, and one incident last week seems to have added a little bit of fuel to that debate.
According to Charlie Kirk, the founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, a shot from a transgender girl knocked the teeth out of an opponent at a high school field hockey game between Swampscott and Dighton-Rehoboth on Thursday when the ball struck the girl in the face.
“A male player who identifies as a female reportedly knocks out the teeth of a female player at an all girls field hockey high school game in Swampscott, MA. The poor girl reacts with repeated screams as her shocked teammates are unable to look on,” Kirk said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Swampscott High School Athletic Director Kelly Wolff addressed the issue in a statement to Newsweek but did not explicitly confirm whether or not the student was transgender.
“In our MIAA Tournament field hockey game Thursday, a player on the visiting team suffered an unfortunate injury on a legal play after being struck by a shot that deflected off her teammate’s stick. We are sorry to see any player get hurt and wish the Dighton-Rehoboth player a speedy recovery,” Wolff told Newsweek. “The Swampscott player who took the shot is a 4-year varsity player and co-captain who, per MIAA rules, has the exact same right to participate as any player on any team.”
A spokesperson for the MIAA confirmed to Newsweek that transgender athletes are allowed to participate in women’s sports.
