Everyone who has ever played golf – even if it’s minigolf – can empathize with the feeling of a ball sitting right on the edge of the cup but somehow refusing to fall into the hole. Unfortunately for golf star Xander Schauffele, it happened during the most famous tournament in all of golf.

During the first round of the Masters on Thursday afternoon, Xander Schauffele hit what appeared to be an absolutely beautiful shot over the bunker and onto the green. The ball seemed to have the perfect carry and was rolling right toward the hole. But then, just millimeters away from the hole, it just stopped.

The camera just watched the ball, waiting for it to drop into the hole.

“How does that stop?” the commentator exclaimed after the shot.

“Give it a minute. Give it a minute,” the other commentator said, thinking the ball would eventually fall into the cup. “This is when you walk real slow up.”

But ultimately, the ball never did drop into the hole and Schauffele had to finish it off with an extremely close tap-in.

It was an absolutely brutal turn of events at the most iconic golf course in the world, and the golf world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.

It’s safe to say that’s a rough way to start a golf tournament.
