Tiger Woods will miss another major next month, as he informed British Open officials he will not compete in the 2023 event at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.
Woods, who has won 15 majors, will now finish 2023 without completing a single major tournament. He withdrew from the Masters during the third round, as viral videos showed him hobbling around in apparent pain.
The popular golfer also missed the PGA Championship in May and this weekend’s U.S. Open.
“We have been advised that he won’t be playing at Hoylake,” a British Open spokesperson said (via Sports Illustrated). “We wish Tiger all the best with his recovery.”
A three-time British Open champion, including in 2006 at Hoylake, Woods underwent fusion surgery on his right foot and ankle in April. Recovery from that procedure typically takes at least three months.
Golf fans understood Woods’ decision not to play the British Open, but many posed the once unthinkable question: Is the end looming for his career?
We will see Tiger play at The Masters next year and that really could be it.
