Even though he hasn’t won a major tournament since claiming the Green Jacket at The Masters in 2019, Tiger Woods is still easily the most famous and recognizable figure in the golf world, making him a valuable target for LIV Golf as it continues its attempts to lure the sport’s top athletes.
As it turns out, LIV did indeed try to entice Woods to join the tour, according to MSNBC and Politico reporter Sam Stein, offering golf’s biggest star somewhere between $700 million and $800 million to join LIV Golf.
It’s incredible enough that the league would even offer Woods so much money, but what’s even more incredible is that the 15-time major winner actually turned it down.
Woods hasn’t been shy about his criticism of LIV Golf, or of the players joining LIV. In his press conference before the British Open, Woods told reporters that he believes players were “turning their back” on the PGA Tour.
“I disagree with it,” Woods said of the players who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. “I think that what they’ve done is they’ve turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position.”
With Woods reportedly turning down such a massive contract offer from LIV, it’s clear he truly means those comments.
