Donald Trump fervently supposed the state of Israel throughout his presidency.
One of his most controversial moves was greenlighting Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, which the Jewish state originally captured from Syria in 1967 as part of the Six Day War.
On Tuesday, a group of reported Jewish golfers spotted former President Trump on his golf course at his Miami Doral property. The group of tourists demanded a picture from the former president, saying things like “You’re the best.”
That’s when Trump sent them a clear message.
“I gave you the Golan Heights,” Trump said.
Trump signed a presidential proclamation recognizing the Golan Heights under Israeli sovereignty in March 2019. The proclamation made the United States the first country to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Heights.
In the proclamation, Trump wrote that “Any possible future peace agreement in the region must account for Israel’s need to protect itself from Syria and other regional threats. Based on these unique circumstances, it is, therefore, appropriate to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”
As a token of thanks, Israel christened a town inside the Golan Heights called “Ramat Trump” or “Trump Heights.” According to the Jerusalem Post, a “few families” have moved into the town since its inception.
