As fires continue to burn in Maui, one PGA golfer has pledged $1,000 for every birdie he records in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Collin Morikawa made the announcement on his Instagram Wednesday night, saying, “Maui has always held a special place in my heart – my grandfather owned a restaurant called The Morikawa Restaurant, on Front Street in Lahaina.
Lahaina and additional areas of Maui and the Big Island are currently being decimated by wildfires. Homes have been destroyed, families displaced and it’s far from over.
The people of Hawaii are going to need all the support that we can give them. During the course of the playoffs, I’m going to donate $1000 for every birdie that I make.
The recency of these events means we haven’t identified the best place for the funds to go yet but as the situation evolves, I’ll share the beneficiary to highlight the recovery work they’ll be doing and how you can also support.”
Morikawa got underway in the FedEx St. Jude Championship Thursday and recorded five birdies in the first round, finishing -5 for the day and tying him for third place with Emiliano Grillo. He will tee off Friday for the second round at 12:15 p.m. ET, along with his groupmates Kurt Kitayama and Adam Schenk
Morikawa is currently the 22nd-ranked golfer in the world.
