The PGA Tour is continuing to lose a number of its notable golfers and the latest player leaving may raise some eyebrows across the golf world as it looks like Australian Cameron Smith, who most recently won the 2022 British Open, is defecting to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.
Fellow Aussie Cameron Percy revealed Smith’s decision to join LIV during an appearance on RSN Radio Australia in Melbourne on Tuesday. Percy also said that Marc Leishman will be making the jump to LIV Golf, as well.
“Unfortunately, yeah they’re gone,” Percy told RSN Radio, according to multiple reports.
While Smith is one of many golfers to make the move from the PGA Tour to the LIV Tour, he’s also one of the most prominent. The Australian is currently ranked No. 2 in the PGA Tour World Golf rankings, behind only Scottie Scheffler.
Smith was asked about the possibility of joining LIV Golf following his win at the British Open last month. While he was frustrated by the question, he also didn’t deny a move to LIV.
“I just won the British Open and you’re asking about that?’’ he said, according to Sports Illustrated.
While Smith has not officially confirmed the move to LIV, it certainly appears to be heading in that direction.
