Before the 2021 season, the Ohio State Buckeyes hadn’t lost to the Michigan Wolverines since 2011, marking a decade of dominance over their bitter rivals. But after falling to Michigan last year and losing in a blowout once again this season, the Buckeyes have now lost back-to-back games to the Wolverines and won a game in the series since 2019. The sudden shift in the rivalry has Ohio State fans ready to make a head coaching change – even if it means bringing back an old coach.
Following Saturday’s game, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer – now an analyst for Fox Sports – was breaking down the Buckeyes’ blowout loss when the Ohio State-heavy crowd behind him began to chant “WE WANT URBAN,” seemingly indicating their desire to have him as the team’s head coach instead of current head coach Ryan Day.
Meyer, who retired from Ohio State after the 2018 season following a scandal involving former assistant coach Zach Smith, was 7-0 against Michigan throughout his seven seasons with the Buckeyes.
Meanwhile, Day is just 1-2 against Michigan throughout four seasons at Ohio State, winning once in 2019 with a roster full of players Meyer recruited. Since then, he’s lost the past two games after the 2020 game was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak at Michigan.
Bringing Meyer back would certainly be a controversial move given Meyer’s history, but it’s clear that Ohio State fans are not happy with Ryan Day’s performance in The Game.
