Throughout his seven-year coaching career with the Ohio State Buckeyes, head coach Urban Meyer coached plenty of All-Americans, Heisman Trophy candidates, and eventual first-round picks in the NFL Draft. But when it comes to the one player who Meyer thinks deserves a statue on campus, Meyer isn’t choosing any of those players.
During an appearance on the All Things Covered podcast from CBS Sports, Urban Meyer thinks that former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones deserves a statue on Ohio State’s campus.
“To me, they ought to build a statue of Cardale Jones,” Meyer said on the All Things Covered podcast. “Beat Wisconsin 59-0, beat Alabama and then he goes on to beat Oregon. And that’s one of the greatest runs of certainly Ohio State history.”
Cardale Jones famously started the 2014 college football season as just the third-string quarterback for the Buckeyes, behind returning starter Braxton Miller and redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett, who passed him on the depth chart just weeks before the season.
But after Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury before the season and Barrett broke his ankle in the final regular season game against Michigan, Jones became the starter heading into the postseason and he led the Buckeyes to three consecutive victories over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon to win the first-ever College Football Playoff national title.
