This season did not go the way head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns imagined at the onset. Texas was the most hyped team in the country, thanks in large part to what should’ve been a dream pairing between Sarkisian and quarterback Arch Manning, who opened the year as the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, Sarkisian never managed to get the consistent week-to-week play that the program needed to get back to championship contention. Texas went 9-3 on the season and was forced to settle for the Citrus Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines.
The Longhorns struggled on the defensive side of the ball as well, failing to produce at the level they should have on defense with the abundance of talent they had at thier disposal.
Now, Sarkisian is making a major change to his coaching staff in an attempt to get things turned around quickly as possible.
“BREAKING: Texas has fired DC Pete Kwiatkowski and hired Will Muschamp as its next defensive coordinator, the school announced,” reported On3 on Thursday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“NO MORE SOFT SHELL COVERAGES ON 3RD & LONGS OR DROPPING OUR BEST PASS RUSHERS IN COVERAGE LFG,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I thought the Texas defense was pretty good and carried them this season. What am I missing?” someone else added.
“Wild. Texas had the 11th best D in the country when adjusted for opponent,” another person pointed out.
It’ll be interesting to see if Sarkisian goes on to regret the bold move.
