The No. 7 ranked Texas Longhorns faced off against the No. 23 ranked Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday, and the game ended in dramatic fashion, coming down to the final play.
Texas controlled the game for a large portion of it, leading by as much as 20 points in the second half. However, Kansas State would simply not go away, completing a ridiculous comeback to make it a three-point game late in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats had a chance to tie the game with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal attempt. Unfortunately for Kansas State, their kicker Chris Tennant missed the chip shot, which looked like it would be a huge blow to their chances of winning.
Luckily for Tennant, he would have a chance to redeem himself. The Wildcats’ defense was able to force a punt quickly on the next Texas possession.
Then Kansas State quarterback Will Howard was able to lead the team down the field once again, setting up a 45-yard field goal attempt to send the game to overtime.
Tennant was able to redeem himself, making the field goal to force overtime.
Texas received the ball first in overtime, where they were able to convert on a field goal of their own.
This meant that Kansas State could either force a second overtime with a field goal or win the game with a touchdown.
Kansas State head coach Chris Kleiman made the bold decision to go for the win on a fourth-down attempt from the Texas four-yard line. The Texas’ defense held strong, forcing an incompletion to win the game.
Texas fans took to social media to celebrate the win, while others questioned the decision to go for the win instead of trying a field goal to force another overtime.
The win for Texas couldn’t have been more crucial for their chances of a potential College Football Playoff bid. In all likelihood, the Longhorns will need to win out to receive a bid, as they already have one loss on the season.
They will look to keep their winning ways going next week when they face off against the TCU Horned Frogs.
