The Texas Longhorns opened the season as the number one team in the AP poll and with the odds-on Heisman Trophy favourite in quarterback Arch Manning. Manning and the Longhorns, paired with offensive mastermind head coach Steve Sarkisian, were expected to compete for the national championship.
Instead, Texas lost three games in the regular season and failed to even make the 12-team playoff field, and the Longhorns will have to settle for facing the Michigan Wolverines in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Sarkisian failed to unlock Manning’s full potential the way many figured he would heading into the season. Now, there are major changes are coming to Sark’s coaching staff to try to get the ship righted.
“BREAKING: Texas has fired DC Pete Kwiatkowski and hired Will Muschamp as its next defensive coordinator, the school announced,” reported On3 on Thursday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Lining up to take the Texas job when Sark goes to the NFL, just like he would have about 15 years ago,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Not very successful as a head coach at South Carolina, but then again who is. This guy can flat out coach D!” someone else added.
“It’s either genius or chaos waiting to happen,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the move pans out in Austin.
