The Tennessee Volunteers upset the Alabama Crimson Tide, 52-49, on Saturday night in Knoxville. The epic game featured everything from game-winning kicks to an offensive lineman puking on the field.
After the Volunteers‘ first win over Alabama in 16 years, Tennessee fans promptly tore down the field goalposts and dumped them in the Tennessee River. Vols’ fans may have also caused an earthquake in their celebrations:
“Looks like the Sequoyah Library MAY have picked up a slight #earthquake (tremors) at nearby Neyland Stadium tonight during the Volunteers football game thanks to the raucous crowd!” Ken Weathers tweeted.
“WE ARE A LITERAL FORCE OF NATURE,” RockTopTalk wrote.
“You don’t see this often. Earth movement as a result of football crowds. It happened one time in Seattle (#Beastquake), and has occurred at a couple other places in college athletics,” Jeremy Moses wrote.
“It’s not unprecedented, but it is rare. Similar things happened after a game at LSU in 1988, as well as the Iron Bowl in Auburn in 2013,” Craig Ceecee wrote.
“Tennessee fans are a different breed,” another college football fan wrote.
Not everyone was convinced it was related, though.
I’ve been chatting with a PhD geologist who says this explanation is a bit unlikely and the seismograph would need filtering to tell us whether this explanation is true or not.

The Volunteers are next in action Saturday when they host the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks.
