The Wisconsin Badgers are entering a new era under newly signed head coach Luke Fickell, and they may have just landed their new starting quarterback for the 2023 season in the college football transfer portal.
SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai revealed on Thursday night that he was entering the transfer portal, and has made his decision to join Wisconsin in less than 24 hours.
He revealed on social media that he’s “fired up” to be joining Fickell’s team in his final year of eligibility.
“After conversations with coach Fickell and coach Longo, I am excited to announce I will utilize my last year of eligibility at the University of Wisconsin. I could not be more fired up to play at a school with rich history and a winning culture. Let’s Ride!”
Mordecai has thrived as the starting quarterback at SMU since transferring from Oklahoma after the 2020 college football season, putting up over 30 touchdowns in each of his two years with the Mustangs. His 72 passing touchdowns over the last two seasons are fourth-most among all college football quarterbacks, according to Pro Football Focus.
He’s perhaps best known for his insane performance earlier this season in the highest-scoring Division 1 game to finish in regulation in FBS history back in November, putting up ten total touchdowns in a 77-63 win over Houston.
This has to be seen as a resounding win for Fickell and company at Wisconsin, and will seemingly put them in a great position to thrive next season in what will almost certainly be an entirely different-looking Badgers team.
