When Deion Sanders first decided to coach at Colorado, many assumed that it may simply be a stepping stone to a bigger coaching job in college football or potentially a coaching job in the NFL. But on Friday, Sanders reaffirmed his allegiance to Colorado by coming to terms on a new contract extension.
Results have largely been positive for Sanders in his first two seasons at Colorado, first leading what was a winless program the year before he came to four wins in 2023 and then to nine wins this past season.
Now, Colorado is focused on becoming a true contender in college football for years to come. And Colorado seems to believe that Sanders will be the man to bring them to that point.
On Friday, Colorado athletic director Rick George announced a new five-year, $54 million contract for Sanders that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country, first reported by Colorado Buffaloes beat writer Brian Howell.
This contract makes Sanders the seventh highest-paid head coach in the sport, earning less than just Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, Dan Lanning, Steve Sarkisian, Lincoln Riley, and Kalen DeBoer.
Naturally, college football fans had plenty to say about the decision from Sanders, with most saying that this extension has largely been earned by Sanders, given the kind of growth he has brought to the University of Colorado.
Does Deion Sanders have what it takes as a head coach to make Colorado a true blue blood in college football? Only time will tell. But Colorado at least believes that Sanders gives them the best opportunity to make a mark in the sport.
