The Michigan Wolverines football program saw its season end in scandal after head coach Sherrone Moore was fired for what the university determined was an inappropriate relationship.
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Michigan’s December statement read. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
It has since been reported that Paige Shiver, the alleged woman with whom Moore had the extramarital relationship, has had her time with the football program come to an end, with the school electing not to renew her contract.
Now, Shiver has released a statement via her lawyers, her first time addressing the situation publicly, “years of manipulation, harassment, and exploitation”
“Institutions entrusted with the education and safety of students and employees have a fundamental duty to ensure that power is never used to exploit or silence others,” the statement said, per CBS Sports.
“A thorough and transparent investigation into this conduct — and any related institutional failures — must occur. Our client came forward at tremendous personal cost because she believes that silence allows abuse of power to continue.”
“The University of Michigan is one of the prominent institutions in the world, but there’s a culture in the athletic department that has hurt Ms. Shiver and others,” Shiver’s attorney, Andrew M. Stroth, said.
“Leadership knew and failed to act to protect her. This isn’t something that happened overnight, it happened a long period of time.”
