It’s not often that you see a quarterback at any level wearing a number in the 30s, but there’s a chance that the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes will be wearing No. 33 as quarterback Devin Brown – who is competing for Ohio State’s starting quarterback spot – has changed his number ahead of the upcoming 2023 college football season.
Devin Brown, who is entering his second season of college football this year and hopes to be the team’s starting quarterback, wore No. 15 last year. However, he asked Ohio State head coach Ryan Day if he could switch to No. 33 this year in honor of Sammy Baugh, who was the first quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
Day revealed that he was initially surprised by the move, saying that at first, he thought of basketball legend Larry Bird, who also wore No. 33.
“He came in and said that was something his family has done for a while,” Day said, according to Eleven Warriors. “He said that was important to him. I said, ‘OK, you’re gonna stand out a little bit. Are you gonna be alright with that?’ He said, ‘As long as you’re good with it, I am good with it.’ So he’s gonna take a run at 33.
“He’s never shied away from competition and never shied away from grabbing onto something. This is something he feels strongly about. He’s gonna blaze his own path with that number, and good for him. When you think about his recruitment and everything that went on, he’s not a guy that shies away from things, so I have no problem with it.”
It’s a unique look, but it seems he’s passionate about it.
