Ever since the NCAA changed its rules regarding its name, image, and likeness policy allowing athletes to sign endorsement deals and profit from their NIL, college football recruiting has changed drastically with very few rules and regulations on the matter. But it looks like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is taking some steps to help regulate NIL in the state of Florida.
As reported by the Sports Business Journal, Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law in the state that will regulate the NIL process, barring Florida universities from using NIL deals for recruiting or player retention, but providing a little more flexibility for coaches.
“@GovRonDeSantis signed a bill stating Florida universities won’t be able to use NIL deals for recruiting or retention. However, teams and coaches will be able to help facilitate deals for players,” Sports Business Journal said in a tweet.
In most states throughout the country, coaches and individuals directly representing teams are not able to help players with their NIL decisions or broker deals for players. But the new Florida law will allow for more flexibility in that area.
It’s a pretty big change, and the college football world had plenty to say about it.
