Former Georgia Bulldogs running back Herschel Walker is currently running as a Republican against incumbent Raphael Warnock in the Georgia senate race in a vicious, close, and highly controversial run-off election. However, it was Warnock who spent the weekend hanging out with Bulldogs fans basking in their SEC Championship Game victory over LSU.
Warnock was joined by fellow Democratic Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff over the weekend at the University of Georgia, where the two spoke to a packed auditorium at the Miller Learning Center. Along with sharing their vision for the state and working together in the U.S. Senate, Warnock took some time to celebrate the Bulldogs on their big win.
“Now let me see if I’m in the right place, is this the home of the SEC champions?” Warnock said, prompting loud cheers. “Congratulations. You all taught LSU a real lesson.”
Georgia won 50-30 over LSU on Saturday, clinching the SEC title and confirming a spot in the College Football Playoffs. They’ll play the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31.
Warnock also took some time to note his political opponent, who was a superstar football player at Georgia.
“Now let me just say, because I’m at the University of Georgia, that I don’t mind giving credit where credit is due … I saw what my opponent did on the field here,” he said. “Heisman Trophy, great running back, amazing football player, but we’re on a different field tonight.”
Warnock then pointed to the work he’d already done in the Senate to help Democrats with the work they’ve done for abortion access, rights for workers, and student debt relief.
“Georgia needs a true champion, and when it has come to standing up for those who are on the margins of the margins, I’m the SEC champion,” he said. “It would be my honor to champion the concerns of the people of Georgia for the next six years.”
