Oregon head coach Dan Lanning made some comments in regards to YouTube that have since been taken out of context.
Some took his comments to mean something negative towards Deion Sanders and Colorado. Sanders’ flashiness and the way he’s built up Colorado’s program isn’t going to sit well with everybody. We know that his tactics aren’t that of a traditional college head coach, but this isn’t what Lanning was getting at.
Here’s what Lanning originally said about Saturday’s matchup:
“But watching film can only do so much,” Lanning said on Pac-12 Radio on SiriusXM. “It’s all about what happens on the field. At the end of the day, YouTube videos aren’t gonna win football games, right?” Lanning said of his team, as clarified by host Sean O’Connell. “You’ve got to play the game between the white lines. That’s the plan for us this week. I’m not really concerned about outside noise. This is all about playing the game, not the occasion.”
These comments were essentially twisted to be a direct shot at Sanders and Colorado, but in reality, it was meant to be a point of motivation for his team.
“I’m saying you got to play a football game. This is between the white lines. That’s where football is played. It’s not played on TV,” Lanning said, clarifying his comments via On3. “Obviously, I’m always gonna defend the University of Oregon, right?
“I’m gonna focus on what we’re doing and how we’re making this organization great. Ultimately, it really has nothing to do with any other team. So that was my emphasis there. But if it’s fuel for the fire, great for them.”
We’ll have to see if Deion Sanders and Co. used these comments, which weren’t meant to be as such, as bulletin board material for Saturday’s contest.
