The North Carolina Tar Heels were in action in both football and basketball on Friday. Their No. 17 ranked football program took on the NC State Wolfpack, while their No. 1 ranked basketball team took on the Iowa State Cyclones.
Both teams were heavily favored to win their matchups. Both were upset.
NC State won a thrilling game against UNC in double overtime after a brutal 35-yard kick attempt missed wide left from Tar Heels kicker, Noah Burnette that would have sent the game to a third overtime period.
This matchup clearly meant a ton to both teams. Following the conclusion of the game, NC State players took the chance to plant a flag at midfield over the Tar Heels logo.
UNC fans that were hoping for their top ranked basketball team to make them feel any better were also sadly disappointed.
Iowa State was able to come away with a huge 70-65 victory over UNC in the Phil Knight Invitational on the back of 53 combined points from guards Jaren Holmes and Caleb Grill.
These games finished in a matter of minutes apart, and many are undoubtedly stunned that both teams ending up falling on Friday.

North Carolina basketball will likely relinquish their top ranking with the loss, and will face No. 11 ranked Indiana on Wednesday in another important matchup.
Meanwhile, their football program is still in good position, awaiting an ACC championship game against the Clemson Tigers next weekend.
