The University of Montana hosted Southeast Missouri State on Saturday for a first-round matchup in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. In both college and the NFL, we’ve seen some strange moments from mascots recently. Montana’s mascot, Monte, apparently didn’t want to be left out of the fun.
During a break in the game, Monte sprinted to one of the end zones. After running upwards of 40 yards, he leaped into the goalpost, head first. The goalpost was largely unfazed. We can’t say the same for Monte. Fortunately, after laying on the ground for a while, Monte was back up and moving around, much to the delight of the Montana fans — particularly the younger ones.
Those who saw this had a variety of reactions. The majority of those were some combination of fear and confusion. Nevertheless, there were others.

As confounding as this is, we have to be completely fair to Monte. It’s not the strangest activity that we saw during a college football game on Saturday. Still, this behavior wouldn’t be recommended for, well, anyone.
Monte and the rest of the Grizzlies fans did have a good night on Saturday, though. Montana trailed 24-3 early in the third quarter but came back with a vengeance, winning 34-24. So, Monte ended the night happy — even if he also had a headache.
