The Michigan Wolverines are currently in the middle of an NCAA investigation into allegations related to illegal sign-stealing. While the NCAA investigation is ongoing and is expected to take at least several months, the Big Ten conference could choose to act and punish Michigan before the NCAA concludes its investigation – but it sounds like Michigan would then take legal action.
According to college football insider Pete Thamel of ESPN, there will be a “legal battle” if the Big Ten chooses to offer a suspension to Jim Harbaugh before the NCAA completes its investigation.
“Don’t expect any action by the Big Ten in the Michigan sign stealing case for at least the next 48 hours, as the league’s sportsmanship rules allow for a ‘reasonable’ chance to respond to an institution or individual. Sources have told ESPN that they’ll be a legal battle if there’s a punitive suspension by the Big Ten to Jim Harbaugh,” Thamel wrote in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Michigan is currently undefeated and the betting favorite to win the College Football Playoff national title. We’ll have to see whether or not these allegations have any effect on its pursuit of a national title.
