Michael Penix Jr. is a perfect example of a player who used the transfer portal to reset his career. And now he’s got a message to some other players who might be trying to do the same thing.
After beginning his college career with the Indiana Hoosiers, playing four seasons in Indiana before transferring to Washington to finish his college career. The move turned out to be good for him as he emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, finishing in second place in the Heisman Trophy voting. And he’s got a message for players looking to follow a similar path that he did.
“I definitely have been having people coming up to me about the portal and stuff like that,” Penix said according to On3. “For me, I feel like you’ve just got to trust your heart, and trust in your decision, and know that no matter what, you’ve just got to make the best decision for yourself. I don’t feel like you should go based on trying to get somewhere bigger, because of the school’s name or something like that.
“I feel like you should go anywhere where you feel a fit, and somewhere that’s going to elevate your game. Help you be a better version of yourself. For me, Washington was that. I’m super glad that I chose it.”
All three of the quarterbacks that were finalists for the Heisman Trophy this season were transfer players who did not begin their career with their current schools. It goes to show just how normalized the transfer portal has become.
