The LSU Tigers capped off their 2022-23 season with a dominant 63-7 win over Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, where unheralded freshman quarterback Walker Howard got just his second opportunity to play in his career thus far. It turns out that the Citrus Bowl will also be his last game with LSU after making a huge decision on Wednesday.
According to Sonny Shipp of 247 Sports, quarterback Walker Howard intends to enter the transfer portal after a meeting with staff members on Wednesday.
It is not exactly a surprising decision considering the talent that Howard is currently sitting behind. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels revealed in December that he will be returning to the program for his senior season. Second-string quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is also expected to return for his sophomore season.
Howard came to LSU as a four-star recruit and the No.5 quarterback in the 2022 high school recruiting class, so there will certainly be plenty of interest from high-major programs.
Many around the college football world took notice of this decision, and are bringing up a number of possibilities for him in the transfer portal.
“Notre Dame made a run at Walker Howard before Brian Kelly’s departure to LSU,” tweeted Pete Sampson of The Athletic.
“Real curious to see where Ex-LSU QB Walker Howard ends up in the transfer portal. He’s a big-time talent with a very bright future,” tweeted Ben Mintz of Barstool Sports.
Another interesting tidbit is that Walker Howard will have four years of eligibility remaining at whatever school he transfers to, which could undoubtedly be interesting for a team that wants a long-term answer for the quarterback situation.
