Malik Cunningham — who broke or threatened several of Lamar Jackson’s records at Louisville — has declared his intention to enter the NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-1 redshirt senior posted news of his decision on Twitter.
“After many conversations with God and my family, I will be declaring for the 2023 NFL draft,” Cunningham wrote in the post.
As a result of his decision, Cunningham will not play in Louisville’s Fenway Bowl against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Cardinals will also be without star running back Tiyon Evans, who previously declared for the draft. Louisville will also be led by interim coach Deion Branch, a decision made necessary when Scott Satterfield left the Cardinals for their Fenway Bowl opponents, Cincinnati.
Cunningham finishes his Cardinals career with 120 combined passing and rushing touchdowns (70 passing, 50 rushing), which broke Jackson’s previous school record of 119. His 50 rushing touchdowns are tied with Jackson for the Cardinals record. Cunningham’s 12,848 total yards ranks second to Jackson.
College football fans reacted to the news with mixed emotions.
“Arguably one of the most entertaining players in college football for the past five years,” tweeted Oliver Hodgkinson.
“Wow. Hard to believe he actually thinks someone will want him in the pros,” commented another fan.
“Thanks for all you did for the University and fans, it’s been a great journey,” tweeted Ashton Wheat Poulin. “We love you and can wait to continue you watch you! Go Cards!”
