The Texas A&M Aggies lost starting quarterback Conner Weigman for the season during Saturday afternoon’s game against the Auburn Tigers as a result of a brutal ankle injury. But it sounds like head coach Jimbo Fisher is still optimistic about moving forward with backup quarterback Max Johnson.
During the SEC Coaches Teleconference this week, Jimbo Fisher expressed confidence in Max Johnson, who transferred to the program ahead of the 2022 season after spending the first two seasons of his college career with the LSU Tigers.
“He’s been a starter in this league,” Fisher said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “Played a lot of football. Was 2-0 for us a year ago as a starter and then, unfortunately, got hurt. So, I feel very confident. I’ve said before we have two starting quarterbacks.
“We’re very blessed to have him and feel very confident.”
More than that, Fisher was impressed with the way that Johnson played on Saturday after replacing Weigman.
“Came out there and score two straight drives,” Fisher said. “I think we scored three touchdowns on five drives. Did a heck of a job in the game. Threw the ball very well. Distributed it and understands our offense.”
It’s never good to lose your starting quarterback, but it sounds like the team is optimistic about the season, anyway.
