Sometimes in football, when a punter goes back to punt, something terrible and unexpected happens, like a bad snap, a fumble, a shanked kick, or even a blocked punt. But what happened during Saturday afternoon’s game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Illinois Fighting Illini was certainly uniquely bad.
During Saturday afternoon’s game, Illinois punter Hugh Robinson was called upon to punt. The snap was perfect, the blocking in front of him was great, he had plenty of time to get the punt off, and caught the ball cleanly. Still, he delivered what was undoubtedly the worst, most disastrously bad punt of his college career.
When Robinson punted the ball, instead of going high downfield, it went straight into the backside of one of his wedge blockers. As a result, the ball didn’t go far at all, rolling just a few yards ahead of where it made contact with the Illinois blocker.
It was an absolutely embarrassing blunder that ultimately gave Michigan State some great field position. And the college football world absolutely blasted the punt on Twitter.

Ultimately, this punt wasn’t the only thing that didn’t go well for Illinois on Saturday afternoon as the team lost to Michigan State by a score of 23-15, ending its undefeated season.
