Given all the drama at Arizona State over the past several months, many were wondering how Herm Edwards was still the head coach of the Sun Devils heading into the 2022-23 college football season. Apparently, that included his own coaching staff who were actively trying to get him fired in an absolutely insane way.
According to a report from Doug Haller of The Athletic, members of the Arizona State athletics staff wanted Edwards fired so badly that they were willingly sharing information with opponents in an attempt to sabotage him and force a coaching change.
“An opposing coach recently told The Athletic that it wasn’t hard to get intel on this season’s team because some within Arizona State athletics wanted a coaching change,” Haller wrote.
While this is a wild move, Edwards’ stint at Arizona State has had a disastrous past few months. After an NCAA investigation into Edwards’ program, five assistant coaches at ASU lost their jobs, the program’s star quarterback transferred from the program, and many people are called for Edwards to be fired for losing control of the team.
Still, sabotaging your own football program by giving away intel to opponents seems like a drastic move. But desperate times call for desperate measures.
