While there’s a lot of talk about college football quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Hendon Hooker, and Bryce Young, a name that many might be considering in the same conversations next year is Grayson McCall, especially now that the Coastal Carolina quarterback has announced he will enter the transfer portal.

“It has been an absolute honor to be the quarterback at Coastal Carolina for the past three seasons, ” wrote McCall. “This has been extremely hard for me, but after much prayer and careful consideration, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal to explore other opportunities.”
McCall led the Chanticleers to a 9-3 record this season, coming off of back-to-back 11-win seasons before that. The quarterback was named the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year by The Draft Network and was also named to the Pro Football Focus (PFF) All-Sun Belt first team. In 10 games in 2022, McCall completed 69 percent of his passes (197-of-285) for 2,633 yards, 24 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed 87 times for 183 yards and five scores.
Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell recently left to take the same job with Liberty, which likely impacted McCall’s decision.
There are going to be a lot of potential suitors interested in McCall, who has put up huge numbers for Coastal Carolina. In the meantime, there were lots of reactions around the college football world.
“Not shocking considering the coaching change at Coastal,” wrote Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman. “McCall put up remarkable numbers in Jamey Chadwell’s system with a 78 to 8 TD to INT ratio in his career, completing over 70% and rushing for 16 more TDs.”
“Grayson McCall is only the 3x Sun Belt Player of the Year,” wrote The Athletic’s Max Olson. “Fascinated to see where he’s looking to go next.”
“He’s probably going to Liberty but I would pay a lot of money to see him with Chip Kelly,” wrote SB Nation’s JP Acosta.
“Wow,” wrote The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel. “Would expect some big NIL $$.”
