The Ohio State Buckeyes have won a national title under head coach Ryan Day despite his three trips to the College Football Playoff, but it sounds like Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith is committed to ultimately claiming college football’s top prize.
During an appearance on the Eleven Warriors podcast Real Pod Wednesdays, Gene Smith made it clear that he is “all in” to help lead Ohio State Buckeyes to a national title, and he’s willing to do “whatever it takes” to make sure that happens.
“At the end of the day, I want to win the biggie, I want to win the natty,” Smith told Eleven Warriors this week. “Whatever it takes to get there, I’m all in for it.”
Smith also acknowledged that the Buckeyes were very close to the chance to compete for a national title this year, though the team ultimately fell just short, losing to Georgia after missing a would-be game-winning field goal.
“We were in position to (win it all), and really proud of our guys. They had a chance there. There’s some questionable moments in that game, we won’t get into it,” Smith said. “But at the end of the day, we had a shot and I’m really proud that they put themselves in a position to possibly win the CFP.”
