The college football world got rocked by tragedy on Monday morning when it was revealed that current Virginia Cavaliers linebacker/defensive end D’Sean Perry was killed in a shooting on campus. He was just 22 years old and had recently made two tackles in the team’s game against the Pitt Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
University of Virginia President Jim Ryan said in an email to the community early Monday morning that three students had been killed in a shooting on Sunday night, and two others were injured. While Ryan did not reveal the names of any of the students, the father of D’Sean Perry confirmed to The Daily Progress that his son was killed in the incident.
“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” Ryan wrote in his email on Monday morning. “This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community and we have cancelled classes for today (Monday, Nov. 14.)”
The suspect has been named as Christopher Darnell Jones, who is a former Virginia football player. As of Monday morning, Jones had not yet been apprehended and remained at large. The school considered Jones “armed and dangerous” and was asking anybody who saw him to call 911.
