The Northwestern Wildcats have promoted David Braun from interim head coach to head coach, the school announced Wednesday evening on X.
Braun, who was named interim head coach just six weeks before the season started after Northwestern fired Pat Fitzgerald amid hazing allegations, has guided the Wildcats to a 5-5 record so far this season.
Northwestern pulled off an upset victory over the Wisconsin Badgers over the weekend, coming away with a 24-10 win in Madison.
It’s unclear what Braun’s contract looks like, but considering the title change, that will likely be renegotiated soon if it hasn’t already.
Braun never coached at the FBS level before being named defensive coordinator and subsequently interim head coach earlier in 2023. He spent the past four years as defensive coordinator of the North Dakota State Bisons.
Social media had a lot to say about the move.
Northwestern wide receiver Camron Johnson posted, “One of the best head coaches I’ve been around. Was definitely the man for the job. Great day to be a Cat.”
Northwestern defensive line coach Christian Smith said, “Well deserved! Only the beginning!”
A different part of the announcement stood out to one fan, who said, “I was today years old when i found out that colleges can sponsor their head coaching position.”
