After a spectacular season that had him solidly in Heisman Trophy contention, most expected star Michigan Wolverines running back Blake Corum to head for the NFL Draft following the 2022 college football season. But in a somewhat stunning turn of events, Corum announced on Monday that he will be returning to the Wolverines this season. And now we might know why.
Though Blake Corum said in his announcement that his decision was about “leaving an enduring legacy at the winningest program in the history of college football,” NFL reporter Albert Breer revealed that his decision might have much more to do with his health.
“Sources: Michigan RB Blake Corum’s knee surgery was actually a full meniscus repair, which was a big part of his decision to stay in school. The 6-month recovery from the surgery would’ve sidelined him for the entire draft process.Corum told @richeisen today he’s staying at UM,” Breer said in a tweet.
Corum was a real Heisman Trophy contender before he suffered a brutal knee injury during the Wolverines’ game against the Illinois Fighting Illini late in the season. Though he tried to return the very next week against the Ohio State Buckeyes, he was clearly still bothered by the injury and it ultimately sidelined him for the rest of the season season.
