Under the current spring practice format, college teams typically end their spring practice season with an intrasquad scrimmage, often in front of a live audience in a contest that’s advertised as a “spring game.” But one new proposal is calling for that scrimmage to be replaced with an exhibition game against a real opponent. And it sounds like Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier would be a fan of that change.
During a press conference this week, Napier said he thinks “there’d be a lot of positives” from this change.
“Yeah, I would have no issue with that,” Billy Napier said according to On3. “I would have no issue at all with it. I think that there’d be a lot of positives that come from it, you know, and I’ve heard all the comments out there and I agree wholeheartedly.”
Not only does Napier think this would be a good plan, but he thinks that his colleagues across the country would support the change, as well.
“And, I think the coaches could come to an agreement about, conceptually, what it looks like,” Napier said. “What situations you’re going to work. It’d be entertaining for the fans and I think you’d probably get some TV time. It’d be part of it. So, no issue at all.”
Obviously, it won’t happen this year. But we’ll have to see if this change is adopted next year.
