NCAA conference realignment has been a major talking point across the country and will undoubtedly continue to be a major storyline in the coming years. And while Big 12 conference commissioner Brett Yormark will likely pursue further expansion in the future, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen anytime in the very near future.
Brett Yormark spot to the media during the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Media Day this week, and he made it clear that while the conference is open to “all options” in the future, there is “nothing imminent” in terms of Big 12 expansion.
“There’s nothing imminent,” Yormark said according to On3. “But I do explore all options that come to me. And if it creates value for membership — both short and long-term — I’m gonna pursue it even further. But right now, we love the makeup and composition of this conference. Love the Four Corners that are joining us.
“They’ve already started to integrate the four schools. They’ve been attending meetings. We’re strategizing on what next year looks like. So there’s nothing imminent with respect to expansion.”
The Big 12 most recently added Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah as a result of the apparent collapse of the Pac 12 and the conference has been linked to both UConn and Gonzaga, which would obviously help bolster the Big 12’s prestige in basketball. But for now, it doesn’t look like we can expect any major moves.
