There’s no real question that heading into the 2022 college football season, Quinn Ewers will be the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, even despite the recent addition of five-star freshman Arch Manning. After all, Ewers was the No. 1 prospect in the country coming out of high school and played admirably for the Longhorns last year. But one college football writer isn’t so sure that Ewers will finish the season as Texas’ starter.
This week, Carey Murdock of On3’s Sooner Scoop broke down Texas’ upcoming matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners this season, and he revealed that he isn’t fully convinced that Quinn Ewers will even be the starting quarterback for the Longhorns by the time they play Oklahoma.
“My question is — will there be a quarterback controversy? Will there be pressure on him to play well? Because of one young Mr. Five-star on the bench,” Murdock said. “If he doesn’t play well to start the season, I don’t know that Oklahoma faces Quinn Ewers in that game.”
While Ewers was highly rated coming out of high school, he was among the worst quarterbacks in the country throwing the ball downfield, completing just 22.7 percent of his throws beyond the line of scrimmage. With Manning behind him, he might be looking over his shoulder this season.
