The Alabama Crimson Tide will start Jalen Milroe Saturday at quarterback versus Middle Tennessee State in the season opener, according to ESPN’s Chris Low.
There’s been speculation for weeks that both Milroe and Ty Simpson were battling for the starting position, with Milroe taking the lead in practice.
Head coach Nick Saban has given strong hints recently that Milroe would be the starter. He talked about his performance in practice recently.
“I think Jalen has made a significant amount of improvement,” Saban said. “I think he’s more comfortable in the pocket. He has more confidence in the way he executes and the way he plays. He’s been more consistent in the way he’s played and I think that’s going to be the key of the drill for him to be able to maintain that consistency in every practice so that he is developing the kind of habits that are going to carry over in the game and help him be successful.”
Saban informed all the quarterbacks that Milroe would start Saturday night.
“I’ve told the guy that’s going to start the game that we want you to play well enough so we have an opportunity to play other guys at the position because that’s important for us,” Saban said.
Despite Milroe starting, Saban has said he intends to play Simpson as well.
