It’s no secret that the Alabama Crimson Tide is having some trouble finding a replacement for former starting quarterback Bryce Young after he left the program to head to the NFL. Neither Jalen Milroe nor Ty Simpson has impressed head coach Nick Saban enough to earn the starting spot, and it sounds like there’s a chance that Alabama goes a different direction at quarterback: to the transfer portal.

On Tuesday afternoon, Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner entered the NCAA transfer portal. And college football insider Pete Thamel thinks that he could be headed to Alabama.

“One logical landing spot for Buchner will be Alabama. Other schools that have shown interest in portal quarterbacks this spring include TCU and Stanford,” “Former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees left the Irish for the Crimson Tide this offseason. It became increasingly clear in Alabama’s spring game on Saturday that the program lacks a clear cut starter.”

It would be a pretty big move, and the college football world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.

After the spring game on Saturday, Saban did not rule out adding someone from the transfer portal.

“We’ve tried to build this program here with the guys that we recruit and the people in the program,” Saban said according to ESPN, “but we have had a few guys that have come in and made real impacts on the team, and if we see an opportunity to do that, we’re always looking for a way to make our team better.”

We’ll have to see what Alabama chooses to do before the start of the 2023 season.
