Whitnall senior Austin Herro spots up for a three-pointer during Whitnall’s 61-47 loss to Greenfield on Friday. Austin’s brother Tyler had his number 14 jersey retired at halftime. Dsc016811

Miami Heat star Tyler Herro once rose to fame during his lone season with the Kentucky Wildcats, which was enough to get drafted with the No. 13 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. His brother, Austin Herro, followed in his footsteps to the SEC on Sunday, but it may not be the school that most would assume.

Austin Herro isn’t exactly the same kind of high school prospect that his brother Tyler once was, listed as an unraked prospect by 247 Sports.

There weren’t all that many Division 1 options available to him, but he jumped at an opportunity to commit to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday. According to Sports Illustrated, his only other offer was Cal Poly out of the Big West Conference.

Herro took to social media to reveal his commitment with the caption “Write your own story” along with multiple pictures in a Gamecocks uniform.

Given the obvious connection to his brother, many around the basketball world had plenty to say about this decision by Austin Herro.

It will certainly be hard for Austin Herro to have the kind of impression for South Carolina in his freshman season that his brother had at Kentucky. Tyler Herro was notably voted the Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2019, along with an All-SEC Second Team honor.

Regardless, it seems like Austin Herro is more concerned with carving out his own path at South Carolina. He will likely get some opportunity to do so on a South Carolina team that on paper doesn’t set up to be all that successful. The Gamecocks finished near the bottom of the SEC last season with an 11-21 record.
