It’s been an extremely emotional time for the students and general community around Michigan State after the horrific shooting on their campus Monday night resulting in the death of three students and five injured by the attack. Long-time Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo delivered a heartfelt message to the community during a campus-wide vigil on Wednesday.
During his speech, Izzo preached the idea of the Michigan State community rallying together to offer their support for the families of those either injured or killed in this senseless tragedy.
“I would like to start by offering my condolences from my family, Lupe, Raquel, and Stephen. Raquel and Stephen were at one of the buildings two nights ago about ten minutes after things happened,” said Izzo in a video shared by Barstool Spartans on Twitter. “Sometimes we don’t understand because we haven’t been through it. That little moment brought me closer to understanding.”
“I am representing our athletic department and Michigan State. It is my 40th year here. I don’t like the place, I don’t love the place. I live the place. To the families of those who were senselessly taken from us, words seem so hollow right now. To the individuals who are currently fighting for their lives in the hospital with their families, we’re praying for you. As a father of two Spartans myself, I can’t begin to imagine what all of you are going through. But I do know that as a campus community, we can offer our support to you and each other.”
As Izzo detailed, no words will bring back those who were lost in this terrible tragedy. However, as a country, hopefully we can move forward with support to those affected and make sure horrific incidents like this don’t happen anymore.
