Shaquille O’Neal dominated in his collegiate playing days at LSU, which he parlayed into a legendary NBA career. And his son, Shaqir O’Neal, who looking to do the same, will be seeking another opportunity at the collegiate level.
Shaqir played his first two seasons at Texas State, where he saw limited playing time and had limited success in the brief opportunities he did get on the court.
He averaged just 9.7 minutes this past season, shooting 33.3 percent from the field while averaging 1.8 points per game and 1.8 rebounds.
As you can tell by his numbers, his collegiate career has not exactly gone to plan through his first two seasons. And because of this, he will be looking elsewhere for added opportunity, officially entering the transfer portal on Wednesday according to Travis Branham of 247 Sports.
It’s obviously unclear how much attention O’Neal will get in the transfer portal. Most Division-1 teams will likely be a bit apprehensive considering his struggles at a program like Texas State, a mid-major who is far from an elite basketball team.
Regardless, maybe his father’s pedigree and influence could help convince some teams to potentially give him a chance. But only time will tell whether or not he turns around his collegiate career moving forward.
