Minnesota will have its first women’s only sports bar after it opens in March 2024.
The perfectly named A Bar of Their Own, Jillian Hiscock’s vision of wanting everyone to have a good time is coming to life.
“If there’s a women’s sport we can show on TV, we want to show it. We are talking about everything,” Hiscock told MPR News. “We want to make it easier for kids, and young women in particular, to be able to see themselves on TV.”
The timing is just as perfect as the name as Hiscock said the early March opening will be just in time for the Big 10 Women’s Basketball tournament — also slated to take place in Minneapolis.
Despite some pushback, Hiscock believes this will be a successful place to watch women’s sports.
“We are really excited to prove everybody wrong and let them know, there is a huge, huge market for women’s sports fans,” Hiscosk said.
This isn’t the first bar to show women’s sports, either.
The Sports Bra, which opened in April 2022 in Portland, Ore., brought in over $944,000 in revenue in the first eight months of its conception. Jenny Nguyen used her entire life savings to open the establishment.
“It turns out, it’s pretty universal — that feeling of being a women’s sports fan and going into a public place, like a sports bar, and having a difficult time finding a place to show a [women’s] game, especially when there are other men’s sports playing,” Nguyen told NBC News.
