The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball had a disappointing 2022-23 season. Michigan sputtered to an 18-16 record and missed the NCAA Tournament. In another round of terrible news, the Wolverines learned on Friday that they would now be without one of their star players.
Michigan will lose former five-star recruit Hunter Dickinson to the NCAA Transfer Portal. News of Dickinson’s intent to transfer from the Wolverine program surfaced on Friday afternoon.
“Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson has hit the transfer portal,” Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported.
The 7-foot-1, 255-pound Dickinson spent three seasons in Ann Arbor. There, he averaged 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 57 percent from the field. He was very productive as a freshman and then more as a sophomore when he averaged a career-high 18.6 points per game.
According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN, Dickinson entered the portal as a graduate transfer.
The college sports world reacted to the news.
“Hunter Dickinson should ABSOLUTELY go to Duke. It’ll be more fun to cheer on his downfall there than anywhere else,” Drew Hamm of Badgers Ball Knower.

Casual Hoya pointed out that Goodman speculated that “Georgetown could be a destination” for Dickinson.

Michigan reporter Brendan Quinn dubbed it “the most jarring move of the portal era.” He also noted that Dickinson is the best transfer player on the market now.
