While Memphis’ basketball team led for nearly the entirety of Thursday’s American Athletic Conference opener against Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane rallied and tied the game in the final minute. That set the stage for Jahvon Quinerly, who came through for the Tigers.
Quinerly controlled the ball before kicking it to his left to teammate Nick Jourdain. Jourdain faked a crosscourt pass, dribbled once and kicked it back to Quinerly, who ran toward Jourdain. Quinerly quickly pulled up and launched a deep three — which caught nothing but net.
As the shot went through with 3.7 seconds left, Tulsa still had a chance to force overtime. Cobe Williams, whose three-pointer with 33 seconds left tied the game, got a look at another potential game-tying three. This time, though, his shot was a little long. It hit off of the back of the rim then bounced off of the front of the rim and away from the hoop, ending the game.
The shot generated a lot of excitement among college hoops fans.
Despite the win, Thursday’s game was still a tough one for Memphis, with Caleb Mills getting hurt late in the first half.
While Thursday’s game was the league opener for both teams, it has the potential to be one of the bigger games on the AAC schedule. Memphis and Tulsa were two of the best teams in their pre-league seasons, going 11-2 and 9-3, respectively non-conference play.
