United States President Donald Trump has been a busy man since returning to the White House. Trump has prioritized mass deporting immigrants, and his policies are even cracking down hard on the visas of legal residents.
Now, a Duke Blue Devils star may find himself caught in the crossfire. Blue Devils lost in a brutal fashion in the Final Four of this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Houston Cougars went on a 9-0 run to close out the 70-67 victory and pull off the shocking upset.
Now, more brutal news is hitting Duke’s program, according to the NY Post. Mark Rubio, Trump’s Secretary of State, announced that he is “taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders,” per the NY Post.
Rubio is claiming that he is making this extreme move “due to the failure of South Sudan’s transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.”
Duke center Khaman Maluach was born in South Sudan, so the Trump administration’s new policy puts him in jeopardy of losing his status as a legal resident of the United States.
People reacted to the news on social media.
“He’s not getting deported no matter what Trump’s policy is . It does not apply to multi millionaires that are about to be working professionally in the NBA,” one person speculated on Twitter.
“7’2” and no rebounds in the last 20 minutes of a final 4 game is borderline punishable by deportation,” another person added.
“Should be deported regardless, dude is 7’2 and didn’t have a single rebound,” wrote someone else.
It’ll be interesting to see if Maluach can secure an exemption that will keep him in America.
