United States President Donald Trump has been hard at work since returning to the Oval Office. One of Trump’s priorities has been mass deporting immigrants, and he has also cracked down hard on the visas of legal residents.
Now, a college basketball star may find himself caught in the crossfire. The Duke Blue Devils lost in a heartbreaker in the Final Four of this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
The Houston Cougars went on a 9-0 run to close out the 70-67 victory and pull off the shocking upset. Now, more brutal news has hit the program, according to the NY Post.
Mark Rubio, Trump’s Secretary of State, announced that he is “taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders,” per the NY Post.
Rubio is claiming that he is making this extreme move “due to the failure of South Sudan’s transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.”
Duke center Khaman Maluach ended his freshman season with the loss to the Cougars and was born in South Sudan, meaning he is in jeopardy of losing his status as a legal resident of the United States.
Frank Tramble, a spokesman for Duke University, said the school is “looking into the situation and working expeditiously to understand the implications for Duke students.”
It’ll be interesting to see what this means for Maluach.
